Residents of more than 200 houses in phase-5 of Sathuvachari that comes under ward 20 have demanded that the open well in their area be desilted to improve the water supply.
The well had been supplying water for more than two decades. Due to accumulation of plastic waste and garbage thrown in by passersby, the well had got blocked.
Local councillor R P E Sasikumar said, “There are two open wells in the area. Water was being supplied from these two wells to around 260 houses in phase-5 for half an hour every morning.”
As it was not possible to desilt the second well, it was planned that it could be used till it got totally dry. A request was made at the Sathuvachari zonal office for the first well to be to desilted.
Sasikumar said the local body had allotted Rs 1.50 L for desilting the first well and a resolution was passed at the council meet in May. The local body would spend the money from the Drought Relief Fund 2013-214 for the work, he said. The water supply to houses can be increased once the work is completed, he said.
