The District Elementary Education Officer here has ordered an inquiry into the alleged caning of a nine-year-old girl student of the Karaiyur Elementary School near Rameswaram by her teacher on Tuesday.

Sources said, Harini, a class three student, suffered injuries on her back and right thigh after her class teacher Sumathi caned her for improper handwriting. On returning home, the girl informed her mother about the incident.

Doctor at the Rameswaram hospital obtained a signature from Sankar to lodge a complaint with police. Sankar urged the Education Department to take action against the teacher. Evelin Suguna, the district elementary education officer, said that a team led by the local AEO had been sent to the school to conduct an inquiry.
