Hundreds of agricultural labourers along with former Minister R Viswanathan and secretary of state unit of CPI were arrested on Tuesday, when they attempted to picket government offices in five places seeking enhancement of wages from Rs148 to Rs 300 under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act.
The agitation was held in front of block development office at Ariyankuppam, sub-collector office at Villianur, Thirukanur main road, BDO office in Karikalampakkam and in Karaikal.
They demanded a separate old age pension scheme and seeking a monthly pension of Rs 3,000, said Balakrishnan, general secretary of the Agricultural Labourers Association.
