'PRP, Sindhu Granite caused Rs 1,200 crore loss'

The district police registered two cases against PRP Granite and Sindhu Granite in Melur, near here, on Wednesday. Police also included Srinivasan, an employee of Tamil Nadu Minerals, and Nalliayappan, owner of a company that sells explosives, in the case.

Police said the State exchequer had incurred a loss of Rs1,203 crore because of illegal mining of granite from government poromboke land by the two companies.

The case was booked under various sections of the Explosive Substances Act, and IPC based on a complaint by village administrator, Anuradha, in which a loss of Rs 302.82 crore to the exchequer was caused.

In another case,  Anuradha said it caused a loss of  Rs 900.28 crore to the State exchequer.

Police said, within a year, the multi-crore granite scam had filed 74 cases against companies including PRP Granite, Sindhu Granite, Madura Granite, GG Granite and Olympus Granite.
