Government hostel warden, 2 cooks suspended over food quality

Three persons including the warden and two cooks of the Government Girls’ Hostel in Vaniyambadi were suspended on Tuesday, following complaints of poor quality food provided to students here.

After several road blockades and complaints about the poor quality of food provided at the Anganwadis  and government hostels, the noon meal  centres in Vellore district came under the scanner.

On Monday, all 16 girls of the hostel located at New Town in Vaniyambadi, studying between classes VI and XII, held a road roko on the Vaniyambadi-Alangayam Road on Monday complaining about worms and insects in the food served to them.

Following this, deputy superintendent of police Manickam, inspector Sivalingam, Village Administrative Officer Santhanam arrived at the spot and made enquiries to the hostel students.

On Tuesday evening, Minister for Adi Dravidar and Tribal Welfare N Subramanian visited the hostel and enquired with the students.

He later suspended hostel warden Premakumari, and cooks Lakshmi and Vimala.

The warden and cooks from Tirupathur took additional charge of the hostel on Wednesday.

Following this, Vellore Collector P Sankar ordered that all block-level officers conduct an inspection at the kitchens and taste the food at the centres on Wednesday. He personally visited the Government Hostels in Vaniyambadi in this regard.
