No action on rape complaint lands three SSIs in trouble

Three special sub-inspectors (SSI) of Kandhili Police Station in Tirupattur sub-division were suspended on Tuesday for refusing to take appropriate action when a rape victim’s mother lodged a complaint.

SP of  Vellore, P Vijaya Kumar placed SSIs Sampath Kumar, Rajendran and Govindaraj under suspension under the provisions of the Tamil Nadu Police Subordinate Services (Discipline and Appeal) Rules 1955, for not discharging their duty properly. The orders were handed over to them on Tuesday.

The SP has also initiated a departmental inquiry against them. Based on the outcome of the inquiry, the department would take further action against them.

Sources said the three SSIs had refused to file a case when Mallika (60) of Su Pallipattu village lodged a complaint stating that Palani (65) had raped her 20- year-old daughter when she was alone on July 16.

However, police personnel refused to lodge a complaint and also allegedly acted in favour of the accused. After the information reached the SP, he directed the Tirupattur All Women Police to file a case and take action. Following this, inspector of AWPS, Shanthi, on July 18 filed a case under Section 376 of IPC and arrested Palani on the same day.

DSP of Tirupattur M Nagarajan said the three policemen were suspended as they failed to inform their superiors about the complaint besides failing to act appropriately in addressing the grievances of the complainant.
