Justice Chandru hails RTE for educating poor

Education is the biggest weapon to eradicate poverty, said former Judge of the Madras High Court Justice K Chandru.

He was speaking after inaugurating an event to mark admission of children at Sunbeam Matriculation Higher Secondary School here under the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education (RTE) Act on Friday. The event coincided with the school’s silver jubilee celebrations.

Justice Chandru said that the constitution guarantees free and compulsory education till the age of 14. The Act has helped bridge the gap between rich and poor in getting uniform education by providing 25 per cent reservation of seats at the entry level classes in schools for children from weaker sections of the society.

Chairman of the school T Harigopalan said at least 50 children from five Dalit villages have been admitted to the school under the free education scheme.
