Scolded by parents for pledging jewel, teen commits suicide

A 16-year-old girl from Sulur committed suicide on Friday night, after being scolded by her parents for pledging a gold stud in a pawn brokerage company to join a catering course.

Police said the deceased, X Amirthavalli (16) from Anna Nagar, Kallimedu in Neelambur, recently completed her Class X examination and was interested in studying a catering course. But, her parents asked her to join higher secondary and after completing Plus Two she can pursue the course of her choice.

The girl then enquired with a city college about the catering course, which also agreed to enrol her in the catering course.

But, her parents refused to pay for the catering course fee. So, she pledged her ear studs in a pawn brokerage company and paid the prescribed fee.

On Friday, when her parents enquired about the missing ear stud, Amirthavalli told them she had pledged it to pay fee for the catering course. Angered by their daughter’s act, her parents scolded her for pledging the gold studs.

Depressed over this, the girl committed suicide by hanging at her residence at 7.30 pm, on Friday. Based on a complaint from her father D Xavier, Sulur police have registered a case and are investigating.
