Landslip in Ooty after downpour

With the South-West monsoon becoming active here, the residents of the hill station, who were reeling under water scarcity and heat till last month, now heave a sigh of relief.

Municipal engineer, B Ramamoorthy expressed the hope that the storage in reservoirs has risen by a foot and if the rains continue, the level would further go up.” While the monsoon has brought cheer to almost all the sections here, it has also started triggering land-slips  with the first incident being reported from the Hill Bunk area here on Monday.

A large number of buildings have cropped up in the sloppy areas in the hill town. Though many were constructed with the approval of authorities, environmentalists have been raising doubts as to whether such places were suitable for high rises. Environmentalists have been sounding warnings citing that destroying natural slopes for construction and road widening could trigger landslides during monsoon.
