65-year-old Dalit woman assaulted, two arrested

A caste Hindu woman and her neighbour were arrested for allegedly assaulting a 65-year-old Dalit woman while she was fetching water from a public drinking water tap near their house in Kottaimedu.

In her complaint submitted with Vadipatti police, A Murugayi stated that she was filling water into her pot on June 5 when Chellathayi allegedly attacked her.

Murugayi said, “The caste Hindu people used foul language and humiliated me by mentioning my caste name in a derogatory manner. They beat me up and pulled my hair. One of them kicked me.” 

A case under sections 294 b (Scolding filthy language), 323 (Voluntarily causing), 506 (i) (Threatening) of the IPC and 3 (1) (X) SC/ST prevention of atrocities act was registered against E Chellathayi (48), S Tamilarasi (45), S Chandran (28) and S Selvaraj (52).

Police said that Chellathayi and her neighbour Chandran were arrested. Meanwhile, the other two accused are on the run. Samayanallur DSP Kantha Swaroopan has started investigations into the incident.

According to police, there have been no incidents of clash between the two communities. Around 200 Dalit and 10 caste Hindu families reside in the village.
