A group of dalits lodged a complaint at the office of the SP here stating that the Sivagiri police had not taken any action on their complaint regarding an attack on a member of their community by some DMDK functionaries in the town on Saturday.
Adi Thamizhar Peravai district secretary Veeragopal said that Balasubramaniam (27), a member of the Arunthathiyar community, used to work as a driver in a saw mill in the town. Last year, he had taken a loan of Rs 10,000 from the mill owner for his daughter’s treatment. Meanwhile, he joined another firm based in Chennai last month. When the mill owner asked him to repay the loan, Balasubramaniam promised that he would return the loan after he got his salary from the new firm at Chennai, Veeragopal said.
However, the mill owner and some other persons, reportedly belonging to the DMDK, called him to the mill on June 8 and assaulted him. They abused him using his caste name. When his wife, Elizabethrani, went to rescue him, she too was abused. Balasubramaniam’s was rushed to Kodumudi GH after the assault at the mill by the owner and DMDK men and later to Erode GH.
