Baby crawls to road, run over by truck
In freak mishap, a one-and-half-year-old baby girl died of severe head injuries after she came under the wheels of a mini-truck that was parked near her house at Kalladipatti in Dindigul on Tuesday.
Sources said that the incident happened as Udhayasuriyan, an agricultural labourer and his wife Thilagavathi (28) were leaving their house on Tuesday.
As Thilagavathi was locking the main door, she left her daughter Varsha on the floor.
However, the child crawled away on to the road in front of the house without her mother knowing.
Suryaprakash, who had parked his mini-truck in the area, started to back up his vehicle and ran over the baby as he could not see her through his rear-view mirror.
Thilagavathi rushed to the spot after hearing Varsha scream and with the help of passersby, called 108 ambulance service.
They took Varsha to Government Rajaji Hospital (GRH) in Madurai, where doctors declared that she was dead on arrival.
Police sources informed that they had questioned Suryaprakash and found that he was unable to see the baby through the mirror at the time of the accident. Police have filed a case under section 304A (causing death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code and are investigating further.
