20-year-old gets double lifer for murder, robbery

A 20-year-old youth was handed two life sentences along with a fine of Rs 20,000 for murdering a 55-year-old woman and robbery.

Velu alias Velumurugan of Mettuidaiyampatti was found guilty of murdering Pooshanam (55), a daily wage labourer of Bagayam.

On October 9, 2012, Pooshanam was on her way home after work when she was stopped by Velu, who demanded her jewels and cash. When she refused to part with it, Velu murdered her and fled with two soverigns of gold she was wearing, cash of Rs 1,100 and a cellphone.

Bagayam police had registered a case against Velu as murder for gain under sections 302 and 394 of the Indian Penal Code.

The case came up for hearing before the First Additional District and Sessions Court on Thursday at the Vellore District Combined

Court Complex. Judge K H Elavazhagan handed out the judgement.

Additional Public Prosecutor S R Shanmugham said the judgment of one lifetime sentence and Rs 10,000 was given under section 302 (murder), while another life sentence and Rs 10,000 was given under section 394 (robbery causing harm).
