Victim of son's torture dies of burns

Police said Kuppusamy sustained over 95 per cent burns after he set himself on fire.

The sixty-year-old man who attempted suicide by setting himself on fire on the premises of the Collectorate on Wednesday afternoon, succumbed to the burns during the wee hours of Thursday at the Government Medical College Hospital here.

Police said Kuppusamy sustained over 95 per cent burns after he set himself on fire. He took the extreme step after a family dispute. He left a suicide note alleging that his younger son Raja had been harassing him. So, he had decided to end his life as he couldn’t withstand the harassment.

However, the police inquiry revealed that Kuppusamy belonged to Yathavar community and opposed his son’s marriage with a Dalit girl. Since then, he had been living separately. A case was registered by the Sathuvachari police.
