Police said Kuppusamy sustained over 95 per cent burns after he set himself on fire. He took the extreme step after a family dispute. He left a suicide note alleging that his younger son Raja had been harassing him. So, he had decided to end his life as he couldn’t withstand the harassment.

However, the police inquiry revealed that Kuppusamy belonged to Yathavar community and opposed his son’s marriage with a Dalit girl. Since then, he had been living separately. A case was registered by the Sathuvachari police.
