A dispute between two neighbours over the barking of a dog ended up in the murder of one of them here on Sunday night.
Sources said that Alphonseraj (27), son of Savarariraj and a construction worker of Bryant nagar, and Muneeswaran were neighbours.
In 2011, Muneeswaran picked up an altercation with Alphonseraj as the latter’s dog constantly barked at him whenever he stepped out on the road.
Angered by this, Muneeswaran once thrashed Alphonseraj. Following this, Alphonseraj lodged a complaint at the Thoothukudi South Police Station.
Based on his complaint, police arrested Muneeswaran and filed a case against him. The case was still pending at Judicial Magistrate one (JM I) at Thoothukudi.
After this, Muneeswaran, who came out, frequently fought with Alphonseraj and insisted him to withdraw his case against him.
On Sunday night when Alphonseraj was walking near a temple located on the northern part of Bryant Street, Muneeswaran followed him and picked up a quarrel asking him to withdraw the case.
However, Alphonseraj stood his ground and refused to withdraw it.
While the quarrel between the two was on, Alphonseraj’s dog again barked at Muneeswaran.
An infuriated Muneeswaran tried to attack the dog, but Alphonseraj resisted his attempt.
This further ignited Muneeswaran and he pulled out a knife and attacked Alphoneseraj.
Meanwhile, Savariraj, who saw the incident, tried to separate them. But, Muneeswaran attacked Savariraj also and he fell down unconscious. Again Muneeswaran attacked Alphonseraj and killed him on the spot.
On information Police rushed to the spot, recovered the body of Alphonseraj and sent it for post-mortem to Thoothukudi GH. Injured Savariraj was also sent to Thoothukudi GH.
Meanwhile, Muneeswaran fled the spot. However, a police team has gone to Tiruchy as they received an information that Muneeswaran was hiding there. A case under section 302 of IPC has been registered against Muneeswaran.
