'Floral tributes on Kumari-TN merger day to Nesamony'

Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Thursday announced that floral tributes would be paid to the statue of Kumari Thanthai Marshal Nesamony at Nagercoil on November 1, the day of merger of Kanyakumari district with Tamil Nadu, by the State government, as a mark of respect to the late leader.

Marshal Nesamony strove for the merger of Kanyakumari district which was part of Travancore Samasthanam even after Independence, with Tamil Nadu, and led many an agitation for this purpose.  Nesamony, a lawyer by profession, served the people in various capacities including as Nagercoil municipal chairman, MLA and MP.  The people of Kanyakumari district have been, for a long time, demanding that the day of merger of Kanyakumari district with Tamil Nadu be celebrated by the State government as a mark of respect for Marshal Nesamony.  Fulfilling the wishes of the people of Kanyakumari district, the Chief Minister has announced that floral tributes would be paid to the statue of Marshal Nesamony at Nagercoil on November 1. 

After assuming the office of the Chief Minister for the third term in May 2011, Jayalalithaa has ordered that the birthdays of Rettaimalai Seenivasan, who had devoted his life for the uplift of Dalits (on July 7) and Veeramangai Velu Natchiyar should be celebrated by the State government. 

Already, the Chief Minister had announced that statues would be installed in memory of Chidambaranathan, who also strove for the merger of Kanyakumari district with Tamil Nadu at Kaliyakkavilai, Kavimani Desikavinayakam Pillai at Suseendram and Keezhapazhuvur Chinnasamy, martyr of language stir, at Tiruchy.
