Police said Bhuvaneshwari, mother of a four-year-old girl, was depressed due to separation from her husband and took the extreme decision. “She got separated from her husband about a year ago after differences of opinion. Recently, she came to know that her husband had married another woman. Depressed over this, she consumed the acid kept in the house to clean toilets,” police said. She was admitted in a hospital where she died on Saturday.

In another incident, an 18-year-old college student committed suicide on Friday by hanging. Divya, a first year BCom student in a private college in Adyar, was found hanging in her house at Kamaraj Street, Ullagaram, on Friday evening.

The police have registered a case and are yet to ascertain the reason for the suicide.

Man Held for Fraud

A 41-year-old man who allegedly cheated seven persons to the tune of `4 crore by posing as a Supreme Court lawyer was arrested by the city police on Saturday.

Describing the modus operandi, a city police release said that D Vijay Dhandapani contacted people promising them that he could facilitate their winning of property auctions at the Debt Recovery Tribunal for low sums, in return of a fee. The arrest was made on the basis of complaints lodged by seven victims.
