DMK president M Karunanidhi, who has been opposing death penalty for any crime, on Friday did a somersault with regard to the capital punishment awarded to the four rapists convicted in Delhi gangrape case. On December 29, 2012, Karunanidhi, responding to a question, made it clear that he was not in favour of death penalty for the Delhi gangrape accused.
“The severe punishment for such wicked persons involved in heinous crimes will be to put them in solitary confinement for their lifetime and not death penalty”, he said while condoling the death of paramedic, at a Singapore hospital.
But, on Friday, when mediapersons asked his view on the Delhi court’s verdict, he said “Though I have differing views on awarding capital punishment, I would say the Judges have given the right verdict as far as Delhi gangrape is concerned”.
