Idol immersion triggers Dalit, Vanniyar row

A clash erupted between two groups during the immersion of a Vinayaka idol in Vellaru River on Sunday night. Following the incident, Bhuvanagiri police arrested nine persons from both the groups on Monday.

A clash erupted between two groups during the immersion of a Vinayaka idol in Vellaru River on Sunday night. Following the incident, Bhuvanagiri police arrested nine persons from both the groups on Monday.

Police said, “Seven persons, belonging to Vanniyar community from Azhichikudi village, arrived at the Vellaru river to immerse Vinayaka idol. During that time, two persons, natives of Kiliyanur village, belonging to SC community were bathing in the river.

Altercation between the two groups developed into a violent  clash. Seven persons from Azhichikudi village including Raja (27) attacked Tamizh Anandhan (34) of Kiliyanur colony. Following this, six associates of Tamizh Anandhan went to Azhichikudi village and attacked Raja.” Both the injured persons were admitted in Chidambaram government hospital.

Based on the complaint filed by Thamizh Anandhan, Orathur police arrested three persons, after registering a case against ten persons. The arrested include Arul (19), Mohanraj(25) and Gnanaprakasam(19), both natives of Azhichikudi. Based on a counter-complaint filed by Raja, Bhuvanagiri police arrested six other persons.
