SALEM: As part of their continuing protest against a battery recycling plant, a section of residents of Paraikadu village near Sanniyasikundu hoisted black flags atop their houses seeking immediate closure of the company, here on Sunday.

The Kitchipalayam police said that the residents had been opposed to the idea of a battery recycling plant in the area, fearing groundwater contamination. Despite opposition, the plant came up around two years ago.

“We had opposed the company when it started construction work. Most of the families in the village depend on agriculture. However, ever since the company started functioning, they have been discharging acids and chemicals into the groundwater and polluting it,” he said.
