Taking all Measures to Prevent Gas Cylinder Mishaps: Minister

CHENNAI: The State government is taking all steps to prevent accidents due to leakage of cooking gas cylinders, Food Minister R Kamaraj told the State Assembly on Tuesday.

During the past three years, as many as 11,140 cases have been filed for irregularities and cylinders worth `1.43 crore seized. Besides, 27 persons have been arrested, he said, replying to the call attention motion raised by DMDK member R M Babu Murugavel and K Thinakaran.

Despite stringent precautionary measures, accidents were taking place due to negligence of some consumers. There have been accidents due to regulators not being shut properly or operation of electrical devices without noticing gas leaks, he pointed out. Fire and Rescue Services Department and district administration have been conducting awareness programmes on preventing accidents due to gas leakages, he added.
