PUDUCHERRY: Police convened a meeting of representatives of fishermen of the coastal areas of Kurichikuppam, Vaithikuppam and Solai Nagar to create awareness about the need for tracking the illegal sale of boats and other activities by anti-social elements.

The meeting was chaired by the circle inspector Chintha Kothandaraman. He asked  the fishermen to alert the police about the sale of boats, if they come to know about it.

The police appealed them not to allow Puducherry coast to be used by anti-social elements for trafficking people.

The meeting was held in the background of  trafficking of Sri Lankan Tamils in a boat allegedly sold to an agent by two fishermen of Puducherry. The boat with 157 people started to Australia from Puducherry coast seeking asylum.
