Over 1 kg Gold Looted from Passenger of Moving Bus

Over 1kg of gold worth worth Rs 28 lakh was looted from a passenger on a moving bus by a six-member gang in broad daylight near Paramakudi

PARAMAKUDI:  In what turned out to be like a scene from a movie, over one kg of gold worth Rs 28 lakh was looted from a passenger on a moving bus by a six-member gang in broad daylight near Paramakudi here on Saturday.

According to the police, Saravanan (45) and Pitchumani (55), who worked at a Madurai-based jewellery shop, were on the way to Paramakudi by bus with 1114.9 grams of gold jewellery in a bag. When the bus slowed down near Kamudhakudi railway gate, two of the passengers tried to snatch the bag with jewellery, which was in Saravanan’s possession.

When Saravanan resisted, one of the robbers attacked him with a knife and snatched the bag. Both the robbers jumped off the bus and fled from the spot along with four others who came on two motorcycles.

This was the second such incident in a span of 45 days, where 100 sovereign gold and 10 kg silver was looted by a gang near Kamudhi on the night of July 5. Police nabbed the perpetrators and retrieved the jewellery within a few days.
