TN Government not in Line With National Water Policy: CAG

The CAG report on Tuesday said Tamil Nadu’s water policy was not revised in line with the National Water Policy formulated by the Central government in 2002.

CHENNAI: The CAG report on Tuesday said Tamil Nadu’s water policy was not revised in line with the National Water Policy formulated by the Central government in 2002. In the absence of a revised policy with legal framework for regulation and control of ground and surface water, the Water Resources Department did not have effective control over surface water and drawal of ground water, report said. The TN government constituted a committee in August 2013 to submit a draft State water policy focusing on development, conservation, utilisation and management of water resources. The State water policy will be revised within the framework provided by the National Water Policy to facilitate enactment of legislation for regulation and control of ground and surface water. The report also said TN has repealed the Tamil Nadu Ground Water (Development and Management) Act in September 2013 with a view to comprehensively change it.
