CHENNAI: The management of disasters, both man-made and natural, has improved with the institution of a single body through the Disaster Management Act as can be seen by the relief efforts at both Moulivalkam and Uttarkhand.

The institution of the National Disaster Management Authority has led to a streamlining of the response and mitigation efforts to disasters, according to T S Sridhar, Additional Chief Secretary/Commissioner, Department of Revenue Administration, Disaster Management and Mitigation, TN.  “Earlier, the management of a disaster relief effort would bounce between several departments. Now, the DMA has removed such problems as can be seen in the relief efforts at Mouliwalkkam and Uttarakhand,” he said.  Speaking at the India Fire & Security Yatra 2014 in the city on Wednesday, he said that the 100 smart cities to be built across the nation should be designed to handle disasters like these.
