CPI Up in Arms Against New PASIC Bar

PUDUCHERRY: The activists of Communist Party of India (CPI) on Thursday staged a demonstration at Koundanpalayam, opposing the setting up of a  bar by the Pondicherry Agro Service and Industries Corporation Limited (PASIC).

Addressing the cadre at the demonstration, Sethuslevan and Karunanakaran, CPI leaders,  said the area already had two  bars and an arrack shop, located close to one another. Hence, there was no need for a new bar in addition to the existing ones as this would make more people take  to drinking, they said. The activists, including women, raised slogans and locked the shutters of the shops nearby. Learning this, a police posse led by Gorimedu sub- inspector Nagaraj rushed to the spot to talk to the agitators.

However, the demonstrators insisted on speaking to the Excise Deputy Commissioner, but were informed that the newly transferred Commissioner was yet to assume office, following which they  dispersed.
