VELLORE: A 25-year-old man, who eloped with his lover a few days ago, met with a tragic end on Saturday.
He died in an accident on the overbridge along the National Highway-46 at Rangapuram near Vellore when the motorbike he was riding hit a lorry. His lover escaped with a minor injury. The 19-year-old college student was shocked over the tragic incident and was yet to recover from it.
Pandian of Jothi Village near Ambur eloped with Alisha (name changed), a Muslim girl of Ballur village, on Thursday.
“The lovers decided to run away from the village after the girl’s family opposed their relationship,” said a police official. The boy worked in a shoe company.
Alisha, who went to college on Thursday, did not return home. After her family’s search turned futile, her father lodged a complaint with the Ambur Taluk police, stating that he suspected Pandian in the disappearance of Alisha.
Registering a missing case, the police launched a search for Alisha and her lover Pandian.
“The youth and the girl had taken shelter in his friend’s house in Chennai and were going towards Ambur on a two-wheeler when the mishap took place,” said the police.
The accident occurred when the lovers were nearing Rangapuram. Pandian lost control of the bike and rammed into a lorry going ahead. Under the impact, Pandian died on the spot. The girl escaped with minor injuries. The accident took place between 5.30 am and 5.45 am, said the police.
On information, the police attached to Sathuvachari station rushed to the spot and recovered Pandiyan’s body and shifted it to the Government Vellore Medical College Hospital for a post-mortem. The girl was also admitted in the same hospital for treatment.
“The girl is in a shock and she was not in a position to speak,” said the police.
