PUDUCHERRY: The Puducherry unit of the CPI on Tuesday urged Chief Minister N Rangasamy to issue a Government Order (GO) to celebrate November 1 as the Independence Day of the Union Territory.

In a letter addressed to the Chief Minister, CPI state unit secretary, R Viswanathan said his party welcomed the announcement made by the CM on the occasion of the nation’s Independence Day celebrations on August 15 last and wanted the administration to come out with a GO, besides publishing it in the official gazette.

The CPI leader urged the Chief Minister to set up a high-level committee to celebrate November 1 as Independence Day in all  four regions of the Union Territory.

Recalling the initiatives taken by his party to correct the history in this regard since 2003, he appealed to the government to hoist national flags in all the offices of the Union Territory.

He wanted November 1 to be celebrated in befitting manner with march past and honouring of freedom fighters, who fought against the French occupation.
