CM Opens Outer Ring Road First Phase

CHENNAI: Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Thursday, through video conferencing, inaugurated the first phase of the Chennai Outer Ring Road from Mannivakkam to Nemilicherry (27 km) completed at a cost of `1,081.40 crore by the Tamil Nadu Road Development Company and laid foundation for its `1,075 crore, while the  second phase is to be implemented from Nemilicherry to Minjur.

An official release here said since road infrastructure plays a pivotal role in socio-economic development, the government had been investing in laying of new roads and maintenance of roads and bridges across the State.

Phase-1 of Chennai Outer Ring Road would ease traffic bottlenecks in the city and its Phase-2 is to provide a major connectivity corridor around the city.

The Chief Minister also inaugurated 34 river bridges and two Railway overbridges constructed in various parts of the State at a total cost of `129.49 crore, besides office buildings constructed with `1.02 crore.

Jayalalithaa also handed over appointment orders to 16 persons whose family head had died in harness while working in the highways department.

In all, the Chief Minister inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for projects to be implemented by the highways and minor ports department at a total cost of `2,286.91 crores, the release added.
