Thanking cadre for electing her as party general secy for 7th consecutive term, Jaya says she will continue to work for welfare of people and party’s growth

CHENNAI: “I don’t see any opponents in the political arena now. They have all vanished into thin air and the people identify themselves only with the AIADMK. The party has been  maintaining its winning momentum, registering victory at the hustings since the 2011 Assembly elections,” said a jubilant Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa after her re-election as general secretary of the party unanimously for the seventh consecutive term.

Thanking the party cadre for electing her to the top post again, she said, “I accept this responsibility with happiness... the sole objective of the AIADMK is to work for the welfare of the people. No force could defeat them if they work unitedly... I will continue to work for the welfare of the people and the growth of the party as well.” The AIADMK chief also thanked all the 2,467 functionaries and cadre who had filed nominations in her name. Recalling that she has been the general secretary of the party for over a quarter century, Jayalalithaa said when her mentor MG Ramachandran died, the AIADMK had 17 lakh members and now it had gone up to 1.5 crore.

The party, after returning to power with a bang in the 2011 Assembly elections, swept the in the local body elections. Recently, it had recorded an unprecedented victory in the Lok Sabha poll. Earlier, Jayalalithaa was given a rousing reception by the party cadre when she arrived at the AIADMK headquarters here. As soon as Election Officer Visalakshi Nedunchezhiyan declared that Jayalalithaa was elected unanimously, it was greeted with bursting of crackers and distribution of sweets.

Meanwhile, BJP State president Tamilisai Soundararajan greeted Jayalalithaa on her re-election as AIADMK’s general secretary.
