Eight-Member Gang Arrested for Carjacking

VELLORE: An eight-member carjacking gang was arrested for allegedly assaulting a car driver and stealing the vehicle at Sathuvachari here on Saturday.

Sivakumar (28), the driver from Arcot, was on the way to meet his ailing cousin in the Christian Medical College and Hospital in Vellore at noon on Friday.

According to a police official, “Sivakumar was driving towards Vellore and when he neared  Sathuvachari, a gang in another car hit the rear of Sivakumar’s car.”

“Sivakumar stopped the vehicle and engaged in a war of words with the  gang. Suddenly the gang attacked him, stole his car and sped away in it. Sivakumar alerted the police and all the police stations in the district were alerted. “All the eight persons were caught on Saturday,” the official added.

The accused were identified as R Murali (26), V Sarath (24), V Anbu (23) and Shiyam (24), who were arrested in Wallajah while Omprakash (24), Suresh (29), Ekambaram (25) and Rajkumar (24) were caught in Tindivanam.

A case has been registered at the Sathuvachari police station and all the accused were remanded in Vellore Central Prison for Men.
