Man Abuses Dalit on Garbage Row, Booked

MADURAI: A Caste Hindu man was booked on Friday for allegedly abusing a member of a Dalit community following a dispute over dumping of garbage in a vacant land near his house.

C Thangam in his complaint to the Sindupatti police said that he used to dispose domestic waste on a public land that was allotted for Adi Dravidars near his house.

On Thursday morning, when he went to the spot to dump the garbage, a caste Hindu man identified as P Kasimayan, a caste Hindu whose house was located near the vacant space, allegedly rebuked him.

Thangam also alleged that Kasimayan abused him pointing to his caste and later assaulted him.

The Sindupatti police have  registered a case against Kasimayan under the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

Police said that both Thangam and Kasimayan have had disputes over the issue in the past too. But, village elders intervened and allocated a space for Thangam to dispose the garbage.
