SALEM: Hours after the chopped body parts of a relative of former DGP K Ramanujam were recovered from a canal in Namakkal on Saturday, the district police claimed to have cracked the murder case with the arrest of five persons, including a panchayat president.
Sources said that the murder was the fallout of a land deal that went awry. Iveli panchayat president Ramachandar (41), his driver Shanmugam (34) of Akkammapettai, Marimuthu alias Karuvamani (41) of Katheri, Subramani (26) and Manjunathan (34), of Kumarapalayam, were arrested and produced before a court, which later remanded them in custody.
According to the Sankari police, the deceased Duraisamy (58), a resident of Anna Nagar near Sankari, was a real estate broker.
On December 17, he had left home on a business trip, but didn’t return. Following which a complaint was registered with police.
On Saturday, Duraisamy’s chopped body parts packed in three bags were recovered from the Kalingarayan canal at Kumarapalayam in Namakkal district. Three special teams were formed by Superintendent of Police (SP) R Sakthivel to nab the murderers.
“Duraisamy along with his associates had bought a 2.35-acre tract for `40 lakh from Ramachandar in 2008. Soon after the deal, Ramachandar’s sisters claimed ownership of the land and began harassing Duraisamy for money. Following this, Duraisamy began pestering Ramachandar to return the money, creating bad blood between them,” a senior official told Express.
As Duraisamy had begun demanding his money back, Ramachandar decided to bump him off and roped in local thugs Marimuthu, Subramani and Manjunathan through his driver Shanmugam to execute his plans.
On December 17, the gang kidnapped Duraisamy, while he was on his way to his house from Sankari. Later, they took him to Kumarapalayam, where he was murdered and body chopped into three pieces, the police official added.
