Mentally Deranged Man Stones Mom to Death

VILLUPURAM:  In a tragic incident near Kallakuruchi on Tuesday evening, a man, reportedly mentally-ill, killed his mother by attacking her with a stone, when she tried to snatch an iron pipe from his hand, but in the ensuing fight, he attacked three more,  including his younger brother and his wife, who have been hospitalised.

Later, police arrested him the same night and are inquiring further.

According to police, Chinnamal (70) of Chinna Salem near Kallakuruchi,a widow living with her two sons Ramachandiran (40) and Periyasamy(34). Fifteen years ago, Ramachandiran got married to Selvi of Vaadaapuram village near Sankarapuram and the couple had a son.

Within a few months of marriage, Ramachandiran developed mental illness and his wife Selvi left him. She went to her mother’s house with her son after two years of marriage and later married another person after getting divorced from Ramachandiran. Because of this, Ramachandiran’s mental illness worsened and his mother admitted him to a mental hospital at Kilpauk in Chennai.

Some months ago,  Ramachandiran was discharged from hospital but his condition had since worsened and he started doing unwanted things.

On Tuesday evening, Ramachandiran was threatening local residents by running around his house with an iron pipe, which was used to blow fire into an earthen oven.

Chinnamal tried to get the pipe from Ramachandiran but he suddenly took a stone from the road and attacked her. Chinnamal sustained severe injury to her head and fell down unconscious. Shocked over Ramachandiran’s action, his younger brother Periyasamy, his wife Sundari and his relative Periyasamy tried to stop Ramachandiran, but he attacked them too with the pipe.

Their neighbours came to the rescue and caught Ramachandiran, and rescued the three from him and sent them to the Government Kallakuruchi Hospital.

On information, Chinna Salem police reached the spot and arrested Ramachandiran. They then sent Chinnamal’s body for an autopsy.

A case was registered and further inquiry is on.
