Majority of Councillors, cutting across partylines, participated in the Council meeting chaired by Mayor P Karthiyayini on Friday and expressed concern over the dwindling water sources and the need for  measures to tackle the situation in view of the summer ahead.

Some of them suggested that the Corporation stop approving new water connections to commercial establishments until the water situation improved. They said measures should be taken against illegal water extraction and water wastage during distribution through pipelines should be arrested. The Councillors said there should be bigger tanks in wards that could be filled with more water supplied through tankers by the Corporation.

The Mayor, responding to the view that there was no point in sinking more borewells within the city as the water sources have depleted, said larger water tanks would be placed in localities.
