The Madras High Court has ordered the State government to consider, within 8 weeks time, a representation from a petitioner who sought immediate implementation of Mayiladuthurai by-pass road phase-I and Mayiladuthurai to Vaitheeswarankoil by-pass road phase-II which have been on hold since 2006.

In his petition, K Rajendran, a lawyer, said the value of land that he held in the area plummeted owing to the non-implementation of the project proposed in 2006. This was due to the lethargic attitude of authorities. If the interests of those like him are to be protected, the project had to be implemented.

Justice V Dhanapalan said the authorities are directed to consider the grievance of the petitioner put forth by him in his representation dated August 1, 2013 within 8 weeks. “Considering that pilgrims from all over the world come to Mayiladuthurai, coupled with the fact that the proposed by-pass road is en route for the famous Velankanni temple and Nagoor Dargah, this court is of the considered view that the matter requires prompt and speedy action,” order said.
