Pharmacists have welcomed the proposal of the Medical Council of India to mandate doctors to pen prescriptions only in capital letters to avoid confusion among similar-sounding drug names.
“Doctors, who have understood the importance of prescribing the correct drug, are already writing names of medicines in capital letters. Some others type it out,” said N Anandan, honorary general secretary, Tamil Nadu Chemists and Druggists Association.
“Some pharmacy companies try to capitalise on the brand value of a drug by introducing a drug with a similar sounding name making minor changes in the spelling. We cannot risk the patient’s safety. If all doctors come forward to write the drug names in capital letters it will definitely help to avoid wrong medicines from being sold to patients,” TN Chemists and Druggists Association’s honorary general secretary added.
