Residents of the textile city got a chance to directly witness bulls belonging to the Kongu region racing in full speed, thanks to the rekla race organised as part of Kovai Vizha - 2014 here on Sunday.
About 40 pairs of priceless bulls obeying the orders of their masters were ‘flying’ on Codissia Road towards the victory post.
As news of the rekla race spread, people from all across the city gathered on both sides of the race track, Codissia Road, to watch the traditional game.
In the 200-metre category, bulls owned by Senthilkumar from Velayuthampalayam bagged the first place by covering the distance in 15.66 seconds, followed by the pair of Suresh from Kinathukadavu which clocked 16.02 seconds and the third place went to the rekla duo of Njanavel from Manupatty (16.09 seconds).
In the 300-metre category, the cart of Appadurai from Dharapuram clinched the top spot with a timing of 23.83 seconds.
The second and third places were won by bulls owned by Santhakumar from Kinathukadavu (23.83) and Shankar Vanavarayar from Samathur (23.89) respectively.
According to the organizers, the 40 pairs for the final game were selected through qualifier race held in January in which 250 teams took part.
Shankar Vanavarayar, a member of the organizing committee of the Kovai Vizha, said that rekla race was held to demonstrate the traditional heroic performances of the Kongu region.
Riders who won the first place in both categories were awarded one sovereign gold each along with a trophy. Second and third place winners were given six and four grams of gold each.
