A 10-year-old girl was crushed to death after she came under the wheels of a lorry near Ayyankutty Palayam here on Monday morning. Tension prevailed in the area following the accident. The lorry was then torched by the agitated crowd and traffic on the stretch was affected.

Police said, the girl’s father Kumaran was taking his son, Naveen (8), and daughter, Janani (10) and his brother’s son Harish (8) in a two-wheeler to the private school in Poraiyur.  The bike wobbled after the lorry hit the bike slightly, following which Kumaran, a government press employee, lost balance. Unfortunately, Janani fell on the side of the lorry while Kumaran and the other two children fell on the opposite side. The rear wheels of the lorry crushed the girl to death while the three others suffered injuries. The crowd torched the lorry and resorted to a road

blockade. Fire personnel from Gorimedu rushed to the spot and put out the flames. Police held talks with the agitators and pacified them. The driver of the lorry, Lakshmanan (36), of Tindivanam, was arrested.
