The Jalakanteswar temple here has planned to give a facelift to the existing ‘Palliarai Chokkar,’ a small mantap, on the temple precincts where Lord Eswar and his consort is believed to be asleep during the night.
According to Suresh, president of the Jalakanteswar Dharmastabhanam, a trust, which is maintaining the temple, the main door of the mantapam would be gold-plated while the side walls would be replaced with mirrors.
“We are planning to engrave the door with copper and then gold-plate it. We may require around one kg of gold and the total cost of this project would be around `6 lakhs,” he said adding, “We are trying to revive the old practice followed in most Vishnu temples under the thirupalli ezhuchi ritual, here also.”
The Dharmastabhanam is also planning to provide a silver covering(kavacham) for the Bhairavar idol in the temple, at a cost of `5 lakh. Both projects would be completed in the next three months, Suresh said.
