The Ranipet Road Transport Office has collected Rs 3.26 lakh last month as fine from vehicle owners for operating without fitness certificate, insurance cover and driving licence.
RTO Balasubramaniam said a team of officials from the department conducted vehicle-check in various places within the jurisdiction of the office in the past one month.
During the check, operators of six omni buses from the States of Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh had evaded road tax payable to the State of Tamil Nadu and were caught. A sum of Rs 1.71 lakhs was collected as tax from them.
Similarly, Rs 63,000 was collected by way of tax from heavy duty vehicles and two-wheelers. A sum of Rs 34,700 as penalty was collected from 48 vehicles without fitness certificate, insurance cover and driving licence; and Rs 47,500 as penalty from vehicles that used air horns. A fine of Rs 10K was imposed on overloaded buses and autorickshaws, he said.
