PMK Almost in the Bag, Talks on With Captain, Says BJP
Tamil Nadu BJP president Pon Radhakrishnan on Wednesday said the alliance with the PMK is close to ruition and an announcement on the matter could be expected any day now. He also said talks were underway with the DMDK, and that development positive to the BJP was expected.
Radhakrishnan also hit out at the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) over its release of purported phone-tap tapes incriminating DMK MP K Kanimozhi in the 2G spectrum allocation scam, accusing it of hankering for limelight.
“We held discussions with the DMDK even yesterday. We are expecting a positive response from them in the coming few days. As for the PMK, we can expect a formal announcement in the next one or two days,” said Radhakrishnan at a press conference on Wednesday.
Sources in the BJP’s State unit said they are scrambling to finalise and announce their alliance partners ahead of the February 8 rally at Vandalur, near Chennai, which BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi is set to address. “We are trying to get all our allies together on stage with Modiji. But, we are fully aware that the DMDK might not give us any confirmation by then. We are told Vijayakant is keeping his options open and does not want to share the stage with the BJP yet,” said a senior leader of the BJP’s State unit, shortly after Radhakrishnan’s press conference.
Radhakrishnan criticised the AAP leadership over the release of the purported recordings of former Tamil Nadu intelligence chief Jaffer Sait discussing the 2G scam case, saying the party was a publicity hog. DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi could shed light on the tapes, he said.
