Red Sanders Auction Brings in Rs 7.45 Crore

The State Forest Department has auctioned over 100 tonnes of heartwood of red sanders and generated a revenue of Rs 7.45 crore.

The State Forest Department has auctioned over 100 tonnes of heartwood of red sanders and generated a revenue of Rs 7.45 crore.  Merchants from Delhi, Gujarat, Kanpur, Bangalore and Salem in Tamil Nadu participated in the auction held at the Forest Department godown at Tirupattur on Wednesday.

A total of 105 tonnes of red sanders, including 70 tonnes, seized by the Customs at Tuticorin Port were auctioned. “We have generated a revenue of Rs 7.45 Cr by selling the seized red sanders,” Conservator of Forest of Vellore Circle S Kalyanasundaram told Express.

“After getting the nod from government, the department will finalise the auction and allow the merchants to take the logs,” said Divisional Forest Officer of Tirupattur Dinkar Kumar. The department would pay the amount to the Customs  after taking its commission for auctioning the 70 tonnes of red sanders. The balance amount would go to the State.
