The need for teachers to understand English grammar and students learning it was stressed at the inauguration of a two-day State-level workshop on ‘Effective Methods of Teaching Grammar,’ hosted by the Post Graduate and Research Department of English, attached to the Auxilium College, on its campus on Friday.

Dr N Krishnaswamy, emeritus professor and an expert in English education, said, “There is a clear-cut distinction between teaching grammar and learning it and a clear understanding of this factor must be understood both by the teacher and the student.”

He said the language style of English was constantly changing but “we adhere to grammar written centuries ago.” He stressed on the need for effective methods of teaching. “We need to introduce level-based and learner-based teaching techniques that would focus on understanding grammar effectively,” Krishnaswamy said.

College principal Dr Ugini Fathima Mary welcomed the gathering.
