Followers of Muthuramalinga Thevar thronged Pasumpon in thousands to witness the historical event of Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa donating a gold covering to the statue of the Dalit icon, here on Sunday.

The entire village was lined with AIADMK flags and hundreds of banners were put up thanking Jayalalithaa for her gesture. Those who could not witness the events from close up, chose vantage points such as terraces and tree tops. The scene at the village was nothing short of what is seen during Thevar Jayanthi.

Ecstasy was palpable in the air with thousands waiting for the arrival of the Chief Minister. Jayalalithaa was received by ministers O Panneerselvam, Natham R Viswanathan, R Vaithilin gam, S Sundararaj, Udhayakumar, Sellur  K Raju and K P Munusamy, Collector Nanthakumar and superintendent of police Mylvahanan at the Pasumpon helipad at 1.20 pm, from where she left for the memorial by car.

At the memorial, the Chief Minister handed over four gold plates comprising the front and back of the statue’s head, breast and legs to Kovai Kamatchipuri Sri Sivalingeswara Swamigal. The CM then sprinkled holy water on the plates and special pujas were performed. The gold plates were fixed on the idol at 1.30 pm. Soon after the ceremony, Theeparathanai was performed at the memorial. Gandhi Meenal, administrator of the memorial, along with her family members gave the CM a rousing reception.

Not to be left behind, over 1,000 women took out a ‘Mulaipparai’ procession. According to Mari, a resident of Nedunkulam, the procession was banned during Thevar Jayanthi. However, they thought that taking out the procession would be an apt way of expressing the gratitude of Thevar followers to the Chief Minister.

Meanwhile, Natesan, who came all the way from Coimbatore to attend the function, said, “It is a golden day for the followers of  Thevar. The people were mesmerised after hearing Jayalalithaa’s speech. We will express our gratitude in the upcoming election,” he said.

The gesture was the fulfillment the promise made by Jayalalithaa in 2010. She donated the gold plates on behalf of the AIADMK.
