In an apparent bid to signify gender equality, a bride also tied nuptial knot to the groom in Needamangalam of Tiruvarur district on Sunday.

The unusual ritual was performed during the marriage of Vasanthi of Kattunaickan street of Needamangalam and P Sathish of Srirangam Railway station road. The marriage was held at a hall near Needamangalam railway station. After the groom and bride exchanged floral garlands, the groom tied the nuptial knot. Later, the bride also tied the knot on the groom.

U Chandru, CPI town secretary, said the father of the bride A Somu has been a supporter of the party.  When his daughter Vasanthi fell in love with Satheesh and the marriage was arranged, Vasanthi impressed upon the groom also to have the nuptial knot, Chandru told Express. He also said the ‘thaali’ for both the bride and groom has been made of gold chain with the traditional attachments.
