The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court has directed that the State Health Secretary be made party to a case filed by a young woman, T Meenakshi, whose newborn was stolen from the Madurai Government Rajaji Hospital (GRH) on June 15 last year.

As the police could not trace the baby despite the passage of nine months, a Bench comprising Justices S Tamilvanan and V S Ravi, directed to include Dr J Radhakrishnan, IAS, as party to the case, since the incident happened at a government hospital.

Meanwhile, the petitioner’s counsel R Alagumani submitted a report to the court suggesting measures to prevent incidents such as baby theft and swapping by introducing biometric registration of births and sharing the details with the parents/blood relatives.
