Memorial for Karikalan Inaugurated

On a day when Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa inaugurated several projects through video-conferencing, she also dedicated  a memorial for Karikalan, a Chola king, who first built a regulator at the Grand Anicut in the district.

The memorial situated on the right bank of the Ullaru river in Grand Anicut is spread over 380 square metres. It houses a bronze statue of the king seated on an elephant, all built for `2.1 crore.

In Grand Anicut, Collector N Subbaiyan, MLAs M Rengasamy and  M Rethinasamy were present. Later, the Chief Minister inaugurated Budalur Taluk as the ninth one of the district. The Chief Minister also laid the foundation stone for new buildings to be constructed at a cost of `43 crore for the Government Engineering College, Sengippatti. She also laid the foundation stone for a students’ hostel at a cost of `5 crore for the Anna University constituent college at Rajamadam.
