Ambedkar Statue Damaged, VCK Cadre Block Road

Residents of Vazhapandal village and party members of the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK )squatted on the Vellore-Kancheepuram Road for nearly six hours on Thursday, demanding the arrest of those who damaged the statue of Dr Ambedkar near the bus-stand in the locality.

Residents of Vazhapandal village and party members of the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK )squatted on the Vellore-Kancheepuram Road for nearly six hours on Thursday, demanding the arrest of those who damaged the statue of Dr Ambedkar near the bus-stand in the locality.

The agitation disrupted traffic from around 8 am to 1 pm. The protestors fumed that the Dalit leader’s statue had been  damaged for the third time.

The stir was withdrawn only after the authorities concerned assured them of action.

The residents noticed the damage done to the  statue at 6 am and soon the news spread in the locality. On learning about the issue, VCK activists and members of the Dalit community gathered within an hour and blocked the road. The gathering raised slogans and sought the immediate arrest of and action against the vandals.

“The statue was damaged during the late hours of Wednesday. We suspect the hand of a few local people and have begun an investigation. We will catch them soon,” said a police officer.

Deputy Superintendent of Police of Ranipet Baskar and a team of policemen who arrived at the scene, laid effort to pacify the protestors, but in vain.

Later, Superintendent of Police of Vellore P Vijayakumar and Revenue Divisional Officer of Ranipet Priyadarshini also arrived at the spot to appease the protestors.

After an assurance from the SP and the RDO that necessary course of action would be taken to ensure the arrest the miscreants, the locals and VCK men withdrew the protest.

A team of policemen has been deployed to avert further untoward incident, in the wake of the issue.
