TNEB-Staff.jpgA pilgrimage to Sabarimala has brought a big fortune to A Bethrasu of the city who won Rs 5 crore in Kerala state lottery.

Betharasu, a cashier with the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB), during his trip to Sabarimala had purchased a lottery ticket in January after much persuasion by a vendor in Kerala.

“It has been over a month since I have had a good sleep after winning the prize money in Kerala State Lottery Ticket Christmas-New Year Bumper 2013-14,” said a visibly tense rather than excited Bethrasu, who has been in a trauma for the past several years due to his strained marital life.

“Lotteries are banned in Tamil Nadu and little did I realise while purchasing the ticket in Kerala that it will make me a millionaire overnight. Though I was hesitant, I purchased it out of compulsion by a vendor in Vandiperiyar in Idukki district in Kerala while on my way to Sabarimala. I checked the result online after coming back only to know that I had won the bumper prize which was declared in Kerala on January 16,” he added.

There was a huge responsibility on the shoulders of Bethrasu after the demise of his father K Aaiyathurai, Line Inspector at the TNEB, as his two younger sisters among the four had not yet been married.

“Though I got the benefits from the government after my father’s demise and a cashier job at the TNEB, I was not in a position to settle the lives of my sisters,” he said.

Still living in a rented house, he is now planning to buy a posh residence for his mother in the busy Anna Nagar area and for all his four sisters.

He is also planning to deposit a part of the prize money with a bank and fund the education of some poor and orphan children in the city.

“I have handed over the ticket to the Anna Nagar branch of Indian Overseas Bank which is expected to transfer the prize money in to my savings bank account in a couple of days,” said Bethrasu.
